Philly Prices Creep Upward Over The Weekend

Piladelphia Inquirer -- Phila.-area gas prices creeping up

INQUIRER STAFF AND ASSOCIATED PRESS

The average for a gallon of regular no-lead was up 1 cent over the weekend in the five-county Philadelphia area, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The average there was $2.82. South Jersey's average was unchanged, at $2.62, after slipping up - and then down - 1 cent during the weekend.

The national average was up by 1 cent, to $2.79.

Diesel averages were up 2 cents, to $3.15, in the Philadelphia area; unchanged, at $2.82, in South Jersey; and unchanged, at $2.92, at the national level.

Prices at the pump have been increasing for weeks - up 6 cents in the Philly area, 13 cents in South Jersey and 17 cents in the nation overall.

Today the price of home heating oil was about 16 cents lower than gas. Home heating oil is a distillate fuel just like diesel and we are getting charged 26 cents a gallon more for it. Give me a break. What a scam.

Prices jumped 20 cents a gallon within 24 hours.

About a nickel of that is state tax. Why the other 15 cents? Simple: NEW JERSEY is one of only TWO states in the US that DO NOT ALLOW YOU TO PUMP YOUR OWN GAS (the other is Oregon, where gas is also cheaper than in its neighbor states). I won't belabor your eyes with the rationale behind having the attendant pump your gas and cheaper prices at the pump. Logic would seem to dictate otherwise, but putting it simply, keeping self-serve out of NJ keeps those massive gas station conglomerates from coming in and driving out the multitude of smaller owner-operated gas stations with one or two employees. It's called COMPETITION. Huge gas stations, in NJ, cost a bloody fortune in WAGES. You not only need a cashier, you need people to man those pumps and fill those cars. This equates, in NJ, to smaller, but many more, gas stations - resulting in price competitiveness that you simply do not see in the Universe of SuperWallyWorld, Costco, etc etc, with their 8 zillion pumps and nary an employee in sight... We are now paying $3.65. I'm hoping that with oil prices "plummeting" (see earlier article) our prices will come down a little.

Overly positive speculators have been driving prices higher. Tendency is to go down much slower than they go up.
