Vehicle history reports

GasBuddy Blog -- For those who are looking to purchase a used car anytime in the future, one thing always comes to mind- vehicle history reports. While these reports may provide you with a sense of security, they don't always reveal everything in a vehicle's past history.

We've been taught to ask for a vehicle history report, even pay upwards of $40 to find out where a car has been, if its a lemon, if its been wrecked, etc. But there's no substitute from having a neutral mechanic check it over. The last thing you want to find out is that the used car you just purchased has been in a massive wreck, leaving the question of structural integrity in the air.

I have a new avenue for folks who are sick of paying big bucks for little in additional...

So what type of recourse do you have if you find out that your car was involved in a wreck? Is the seller under obligation to disclose this?

Very good advice & interesting that the US now has a gov't run history site. My current commuter car I bought used from a new car dealer (supposedly more honest & safer but not this time) & found out when someone rear-ended me in minor way that still undercarriage damage from a front-end accident. I'm in Ont. with 2 diff. routes for consumer action but none helped. We have a vehicle registration pkg as part of transactions but not helpful. Also checking Car Proof & another such service had no record. Also, dealers supposedly have UCDA history service that dealer states nothing on. However, dealer thru some front-end warranty service must have determined problem & didn't tell me. 3 diff. mechanics worked on it & alignment could barely be brought to spec. with the issue (& alignment was done 3 times). They actually used such services as CarProof to deflect blame from themselves.
So not only have a good mechanic look it over but make sure someone with autobody knowledge does to. A run of the mill mechanical mechanic likely would not have seen the remnants left on my car.

As for Sivart, what's the complaint...you choose to read based on headings/paragraphs so choose ones you want - I'm also interested in car related items. I haven't seen even one related to gas...remember Oil doesn't seem to relate to gas prices anymore.

if an accident occurred without witness and report, it is easily hidden. This probably happened a lot.

My last two cars I bought where 1 year old with factory warranty left on them. Better to buy a 1-2 yearold car then be ate alive with the depreciation of $6-10,000 hit.

even the history report doesn't tell the whole story. Sometime wreck damage is not turned in and doesn't show.

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is a near complete government resource for those looking into a new vehicle to ensure better chances of protecting yourself against salvaged or vehicles declared a total loss.

I would highly suggest checking it out, even if not in the market for a new car, to see what you can learn for future experiences.

NMVTIS also provides links to multi-state vehicle search records for as little as $4.95 for a complete report- a lot better pricing than other companies who use the extra money to market their services.

Don't let your mechanic talk to the seller!!!!!!!If they are not professional liars, they learn as soon as the car is for sale..I've used Car-fax (little help), but how do we get in contact with NMVTIS ?

I had a car rear ended by run away acceleration(old guy hit gas instead of brake). We both had Allstate. An Allstate Preferred shop said they would fix the car.I wanted it totaled. Repair was poor.Bent parts that should have been replaced were poorly straightened.Leaks were never fixed. Allstate waranteed the repair I didn't want. I was sick of bringing the car to the shop for another day leave it first thing, they keep it over night. Until the body shop went out of business!!! I got a carfax on my own car, withno mention of this accident!I got a notice about a class action law suit about the secret loss of value of cars repaired in this situation

Especially in our modern times of 24 month leases, used cars can be a good deal. But it is true that you have to have it checked over, and it's a good idea to talk to the previous owner.

The best thing to do is buy new and drive the car until the wheels fall off.

I have never bought a used vehicle and will not in the future. I will continue to know my history with my car and any problems I come up with are covered by the extended warrantee.

Look that used car over closely. Should always expect some problems which will develop shortly based on amount of mileage on the vehicle.

horses cost quite a bit of money to maintain.

stable, hay, feed, grooming, vet fees, plus major league daily cleaning...

cars may be just a wee bit cheaper...

but not as much fun as Mr. Ed
