I have problems in my neighborhood of kids not paying attention and running into the street. How we regulate that? Parents are there but small children move quickly.

from someone who has lost a friend to a teenager yacking on the phone, killing my friend who was standing ON THE SIDE of the road (the teenager swerved all over the road b/c she wasn't paying attention and didn't have full control speeding on a hilly country road) I hope that people do get in trouble for taking their attention off the road.

Yes, traindude, SOME people can multitask, but your reaction time is STILL delayed, esp if you try to remember the conversation.

traindude: I disagree w/ your view on common sense law. We wouldn't need those laws if the US as a whole was so litigous and if people had indeed some common sense left.

some people can't do two things at once, others can. texting while driving is stupid period. I talk while i'm driving all of the time for business, i also use an ear piece or my GPS has a bluetooth connection. if you take this arguement to the extreme, anything that removes your eyes from your path of travel is dangerous. for example your radio, your cup holder, or even your spedometer avert your eyes from the road and remove your hands from the wheel. i really have a problem with common sense laws like this, adult helmet and seat belt laws. life is about choices and this country used to be about freedoms. I don't want to see anyone get hurt from someone else's mistakes, but all of the costs for the "priveldge" of driving add up and it wasn't too long ago that states were complaining about lost tax revenue from the down turn in driving so be careful CA, your short term selective enforcement of laws my eventually bite you in the tax coffer.

University of Utah has published a study showing that motorists who talk on handheld or hands-free cellular phones are as impaired as drunken drivers."

I was following a driver who was weaving a fair bit, and I noticed she was texting and driving. I have prevously seen people reading magazines while they were driving. When behind the wheel do only one thing, and thats drive, and keep more people alive.

I see people everywhere texting, walking into traffic like idiots (on foot), riding bicycles, motor cycles, driving cars and one of my neighbors managed to kill himself, his wife and left his orphaned children all in Intensive Care and we don't know if they are even going to live, because he had to get that message, it was so very important and he was driving the family truck with the crew cab and everyone in it. Whang off the road from the distraction and a rollover. He died with the thing in his hand.

... I'm glad to hear that the police are enforcing the law, somewhere! ...

... They are NOT enforcing the law here in New Jersey! Not like California. ...

... BUT, what does this have to do with the price of gas or oil? ...

Good, MRED3. I've seen almost daily illegal stops by cops, turning on the lights to run a red (he stopped at the next light, so no emergency), illegal lane changes, etc. This should be stopped. Like Richard Nixon, the should be shown to not be above the law. Oh, I forgot, speeding to set up a *speed trap* !

I wonder how many cops will be giving other cops tickets for using a cell phone or even their computers while driving.

This is a good law. However, I sincerely hope the cops have more important matters than to put all this manpower on cell phone usage while driving.

They don't need any NEW laws against this stuff ....there is one already on the books it's called "Inattentive Driving" ....Which should cover anything you can think of .....DUH just enforce the laws we have ....it's isn't frickin rocket science.....these new laws are nothing more than Revenue generators.....

And this would represent less than 1/100th of 1 percent of active users. Not enough cops to enforce it; although it is a good law.

Well I agree 101 % with the law on no texting receiving or sending while driving or stop at Stop sign or stop lights, but talking that another matter. All type of law enforcement taxi driver and many other answer radio while driving, if cell phone are a distraction so is talking on a radio or trying to take down an address or remember one for that matter is also distracting. Its like seat belts law what good for one is good for all, why should some be exempt from wearing a seat belt or talking on a cell phone or radio. Hand free is the way to go if you have to answer that call.

check the cell phone and text record of ANYONE caught doing this while driving. Fine will be $ 100 per text and $ 100 per call placed in the past week. If they continue to do it, California will soon be out of debt.

Good to hear. Some neighbors of ours died because of using their cell phone while driving and their kids (who were in the crew cab seat of their pickup) are all in ICU now and we don't know if they are going to make it. Orphans at an early age. One vehicle turnover accident and he died with the cellphone on and in his hand.

It is still legal in Minnesota to use a cell phone whilst driving for talking but the texting aspect of them became illegal about a year ago. And I fully agree with the way our law here is now put in place. (Phone talking Legal---Texting, checking text messages Illegal)

In South Dakota's legislative session in the spring of 2010, it was so stupid and biased about personal freedoms, that it was unable to enact any anti texting legislation for 15-16 year old drivers!
