Full Steam Ahead For California Geothermal Plans?

npr.org -- Right below your feet is enough potential clean energy to keep the whole country humming with electricity for 30,000 years, according to Department of Energy calculations...

But there is a catch: We have to get to it.

...two hours north of San Francisco, atop a ridge crisscrossed with pipes, is the world's biggest field for producing geothermal energy: The Geysers. Wandering around at The Geysers is.. like hiking across the top of a tea kettle — pipelines hiss with steam pressure tapped from far below the surface, and the steam drives turbines to generate electricity.

In California, geothermal energy plants like this one provide more than twice as much renewable energy as wind and solar combined.

"The pot of gold, if you will, is that we have a huge renewable energy resource th

CobraLeader...Where did you find your avatar? Thats Mutley from Penelope Pitstop! I loved him and find it much more interesting and closer to the subject matter of this forum than this story. At least he was fueling vehicles in the cartoon.

It's a viable energy source that we should have tapped into decades ago. Just ask Iceland about geothermal energy.

Think you've used that one way too many times now judgemobile! Plus please read the article, this one is about geothermal energy from below.

Sounds like your pipe dream Sody33. There is now underground trail of geothermal springs. Much of the geothermal energy is found in calderas. They are not all interconnected throughout the West.

Iceland makes the most of its geothermal sources right now. The New Hampshire Institute of Art has taken full advantage of geothermal energy right in downtown Manchester, NH at its 2 year old dorm and classrooms while also restoring the city's first high school on the same site!

Geothermal has been around for a long time. The challenges have been technical, like gravel, debris coming up along with steam damaging equipment used to harvest geo-thermal steam. There are probably improvements since then. On the whole it looks encouraging.

Yup, then they dip underground and come up again on this side of the Sierra Nevadas so we can also tap into that source. Same one that follows up to Yellowstone if you look at a cross section of the Western U.S.

If we start messing around, injecting water into the Earth to replenish the water lacking, we are just asking for trouble.
